Marko Lehtovaara to leave Grexel at year-end

Marko Lehtovaara, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Grexel Ltd.– the leading energy certificate registry provider in Europe and part of EEX Group – will leave the company at the end of December 2021.

Marko Lehtovaara has been working in the energy certification business since day one and founded Grexel in 1995. Over the past 25 years, he has put his expertise in the service of several European Issuing Bodies as well as the Association of Issuing Bodies to create reliable and easy certificates tracking. Today, the services provided by Grexel are used by more than 15,000 account holders across 15 countries.

“As a Chief Executive Officer, Marko has led Grexel to significantly enhance the energy certificate registry business, but also to contribute to the development of the renewable energy market in Europe and globally. On behalf of the whole Management Board I’d like to thank him for his dedication and hard work”, comments Peter Reitz, CEO of EEX.

Markus Klimscheffskij, Sustainable Business Consultant for Gaia Consulting Ltd, has been appointed by Grexel’s Board of Directors as new CEO of Grexel.

Marko Lehtovaara says “Leading Grexel has been an organic part of my life for a very long time. I feel difficult to let go, but also happy to leave the company in the capable hands of Markus. I trust this new leadership will also bring new ideas and energy to the equation, helping Grexel to reach totally new levels as part of EEX Group”.

As a consultant, Klimscheffskij conducted over 100 projects in areas related to renewable energy, climate, carbon accounting, circular economy, business strategy and digitalization. He is also a former Grexel team member, who worked first as an energy certification expert from January 2011 to July 2014 and then as a director from July 2014 to June 2016.

About his appointment as new Grexel CEO, Markus Klimscheffskij, declares “What a time to re-dive into the field of energy certification, which is rapidly gaining momentum through increased demand and new energy carriers being introduced. I can’t express how happy and honored I am to return to my professional roots at a time when the role of Guarantees of Origin in promoting renewable energy and enabling green consumer choice has exponentialized.”

Markus Klimscheffskij’s appointment will become effective as of 1st August 2021. Marko Lehtovaara and Markus Klimscheffskij will work together for a handover period until the end of the year.
