The future is getting closer – thanks to the right raw materials

When Elon Musk had reusable launch vehicles developed, for example, he was ridiculed. Today, these rockets are among the most successful in the world. Battery-electric applications are on the rise, even if some of them, such as battery-electric aircraft or autonomous driving, still need some time before they are ready for professional use. Climate neutrality for air traffic would be a big plus for climate change. It is not only the CO2 emitted in the air that is harmful. Even fuel that does not come from fossil sources has an impact on the climate. This is due to the high altitude at which the exhaust gases are produced. There are several companies working on battery-powered electric aircraft, and battery manufacturers are also keen to get involved. The batteries and therefore raw materials such as lithium, cobalt and other battery metals are crucial for the success of electromobility and therefore for the successful transition away from fossil fuels.

However, the electrification of transportation is also providing benefits on a smaller scale. In Munich, for example, there is currently a test run lasting several months for electrically powered minibuses and e-rickshaws that run free of charge. The offer is supplemented by an electric vehicle rental service. This makes it easier to get around the old town free of charge and without emissions. Not only on the roads or in the air, but also on the water, work is being done on environmentally friendly drives. Instead of a conventional ferry, an electrically powered boat that floats one meter above the surface of the water will transport passengers from Stockholm to an island from the autumn. This works without CO2 emissions and is also faster than a conventional ferry. These are innovative and attractive possibilities thanks to battery raw materials and they are good for climate change.
