SMA provides Ukrainian hospital with solar battery storage solution

Round-the-clock electricity supply: Together with the RePower Ukraine Foundation, SMA has provided a PV solution to the Brovary Multidisciplinary Clinical Hospital in Ukraine. In future, the hospital will be able to cover around half of its energy consumption with self-produced electricity. The battery storage system and integrated emergency power function guarantee that the electricity supply will also be available at night and in the event of power outages. Representatives from the city of Kyiv and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, as well as embassy officials from European countries and international project partners all came together to celebrate the commissioning, which was held as a hybrid event with a digital feed.

“I’m absolutely delighted that we have been able to use our technology to help provide safe, reliable healthcare to this region,” said SMA CEO Jürgen Reinert. “This project is an impressive example of what has been our driving force at SMA ever since the company was founded: to enable an independent, cost-effective and secure energy supply. The PV and battery storage solution has turned the hospital into a flagship project in terms of energy independence and environmental impact. The energy costs saved can be put into investments in medication and medical equipment.”

"This project, which has been in implementation since March 2023, is not just about installing solar panels and backup batteries. It is primarily about the energy independence of the Brovary community, the resilience of critical infrastructure, and ensuring medical services for residents of the Brovary community, despite challenges with constant power outages," noted Iaroslava Denisova, CEO of RePower Ukraine Charitable Foundation. "We are creating a model of supporting energy supply for hospitals that needs to be scaled to other medical facilities throughout Ukraine with the participation of local and central authorities."

“The installation of alternative energy sources is not just an urgent process, but also an extremely necessary one, in light of the current conditions,” added Ihor Sapozhko, mayor of Brovary. “We would like to thank all the organizations and every individual who played a part in the Solar Hospitals project. Being able to ensure our patients‘ safety in a reliable way is the result of our combined efforts.”

Autonomous power source ensures supply even in the event of grid failure

The hospital provides medical care for around 200,000 people. In total, the medical facility has 24 departments and centers, and the installed solar power plant is specifically designed for backup power supply to the hospital’s intensive care unit. The 21 kW PV system and 7 kWh battery system allows the hospital to cover around half of its energy consumption levels, at around 30,000 kWh/year, significantly reducing electricity costs. A key reason for choosing the system was the secure electricity supply at night and/or power outages, as the hospital has pediatrics, infectious diseases and maternity departments. The PV and battery system, plus the integrated emergency energy supply, can now be used as an autonomous power source. Considering the Russian invasion and the attacks on the energy infrastructure, decentralization of the Ukrainian energy supply plays an important role when it comes to greater energy safety and resilience.

SMA technology provides seamless energy supply

SMA is a member of the RePower Ukraine Foundation and has donated PV and battery inverters, as well as other components in the system, such as PV modules and battery storage systems, taking care of the design and planning as well as the installation costs. The energy solution consists of a 21.60 kilowatt-peak PV system with the state-of-the-art Sunny Tripower X PV inverter including SMA ShadeFix yield optimization software. The 7-kWh battery system consists of three Sunny Island battery inverters with emergency power function and three battery storage systems. A Sunny Home Manager 2.0 takes care of the energy management, while power generation and consumption are visualized in the monitoring portal Sunny Portal. 40 solar modules from JinkoSolar are installed on the roof of the hospital.
