Solar eclipse, energy, Mexico and mining

If areas are in darkness, there is no solar energy.

A solar eclipse, such as the one on Monday in North America, Mexico and Canada, has an impact on electricity generation. Around 30 gigawatts of solar capacity were lost as a result. Mexico is likely to have been the hardest hit. A loss of 17 gigawatts was estimated. As other types of generation have been ramped up, it is unlikely that the price of electricity will be affected. Mexico is an exciting country for the mining industry. After all, Mexico is the largest silver-producing country in the world. Mexico also scores highly when it comes to gold and copper. The mining law was revised in 2023 and does not necessarily please the mining companies, as there is probably a lack of precision in some areas. The exploration of new deposits is now the responsibility of the SGM geological service, which is part of the Ministry of Economy. There are fears of a decline in investment. Nevertheless, Mexico is a very good place for raw materials companies.

Presidential elections are due to be held in Mexico on June 2.  Two women are poised to become the first female president in the history of Mexico. This is exciting for mining companies, as the current president wants to ban open pits, for example. This could scare off investors and would not be conducive to new projects. The candidates now running are going in a different direction, namely in a more mining-friendly direction. According to studies by the Fraser Institute, Mexico is currently ranked 37th out of 62 listed regions. This is because the political environment is (still) rated as poor. The geological environment, on the other hand, is ranked 19th.

There are many mining companies in Mexico that are making excellent progress, such as MAG Silver and Osisko Developmenthttps://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/osisko-development-corp/ -. The latter company is developing a gold project in Canada, one in the USA and one in Mexico. The aim is to become a medium-sized gold producer.

MAG Silverhttps://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/mag-silver-corp/ – has a stake in the producing Juanicipio mine in Mexico. The company’s portfolio also includes other promising projects.
