After his studies in photography at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, Baan followed his interest in documentary photography, before narrowing his focus to record the various ways in which individuals, communities and societies create and interact within their built environment. In the summer of 2022, the artist was a guest at Hombroich to photographically document the impressive walk-in sculptures of Erwin Heerich (1922-2004) on the occasion of his 100th birthday. Baan spent several days exploring the museum and the Raketenstation with his camera, observing the interplay of light, works and people. The result is a diverse collection that shows a contemporary view of Hombroich, the local architecture, but also of nature and visitors.
From 26 March, Stiftung Insel Hombroich will be exhibiting a selection of these photographic expeditions in an installation specially conceived by Baan. Presented are more than 130 colour photographs on Japanese thin Kozo Awagami paper, which in its delicacy and light transparency underlines the fleetingness of the works.
