Everyone knows gold, yet there are not so well-known facts about the precious metal

Gold, always in hot demand, darling of many investors, can come up with surprising findings.

Since the discovery of gold thousands of years ago, the precious metal has been a valuable commodity because of its beauty and because of its many uses. The word gold comes from the Old English word geolu, meaning yellow. The Aztec word for gold "teocuitatil" was translated by Europeans as "excrement of the gods". Very malleable, gold can be turned into thin sheets only a few millionths of an inch thick. Thus, an ounce of gold can be drawn into a wire 60 miles long. A nugget weighing one ounce of gold is rarer to find than a five-carat diamond. And the largest gold nugget ever found in the U.S. weighed 195 pounds; it was discovered in California. The largest gold nugget that still exists today is named "Hand of Faith", it was found in Australia in 1980 and it has a weight of 27 kilograms. The nugget is exhibited in Las Vegas in the Golden Nugget Casino.

Most Western economies used the gold standard until 1961. It was ended by President Nixon in 1971. The last country with a gold-linked currency was Switzerland. Of one Swiss franc, 40 percent was gold-backed until the country joined the International Monetary Fund in 1999. The U.S. claims to have the largest gold reserves, more than 8,000 tons. Most of it is held at Fort Knox in Kentucky. Most of the gold was produced in South Africa until 2006. South Africa also has the deepest gold mine on earth, the Mponeng mine, which reaches some four kilometers down.

There are a lot of interesting things about gold, for investors it is recommended to have gold mining shares in the portfolio, for example from the gold company Maple Gold Mineshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Nt7qtgSURo -. Together with its partner Agnico Eagle Mines, Maple Gold Mines is developing the promising Douay and Joutel gold projects in Quebec.

CanaGold Resourceshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7q_tszitZg – is working hard to bring its flagship New Polaris project in Colombia towards production. Up to 37 grams of gold per ton of rock have already been identified.
