Raw materials of the future

Electric vehicle registrations are on the rise, especially in China. Cobalt and lithium are involved.

In August, 321,000 new electric vehicles were sold in China. These are excellent sales figures. Compared to August 2020, this represents a whopping 180 percent increase. Compared to August 2019, it is 120 percent more. The market penetration of new electric vehicles reached a record high this year in August (17.8 percent). China supports this trend as it aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 2030. China is aiming for carbon neutrality by 2060.

By 2025, China says electric vehicles should account for about 20 percent of new car purchases. But now that goal could succeed well ahead of schedule. Domestic carmakers have been particularly strong sellers. They have also taken effective measures to cope with the chip shortage. Li Auto led the way with nearly 10,000 electric vehicles delivered in August. Xpeng and Nio, also important car producers in China, expect even significantly higher delivery figures for September than seen in August.

One of the factors responsible for the increasing number of electric vehicles is the advancing technology in lithium-ion batteries. The battery systems must and can offer ever greater ranges, faster charging times and strong reliability, not only for private vehicles but also for commercial vehicles. Mining companies have the necessary lithium in the relevant projects.

In Mongolia, for example, ION Energyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpvLzzNsJ1A – is working on the Baavhai Uul and Urgakh Naran projects, thus the largest exploration licenses in the country. Mongolia is mining and investment friendly, and China, with its large market, is neighboring. Cobalt is also an important material in electric car batteries.

In Finland, for example, Mawson Goldhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSEOci01l2A – owns the Rajapalot gold-cobalt project. A recently updated inferred mineral resource was extremely positive.
