The effort to reintroduce a transatlantic dimension to the civic learning field through the TECE project comes at a critical time, as both Germany and the United States experience similar societal challenges: structural racism, rising right-wing populism, polarization and mistrust of democratic institutions and the media, not to mention a strained transatlantic relationship, all exacerbated further by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although Germany’s infrastructure for extracurricular civic education is largely rooted in post-WWII U.S. reeducation policies, professional and pedagogical exchange in non-formal civic education and youth work has since been sparse. Professional discourses in this field have developed separately, resulting in distinct and highly diverse infrastructures, concepts and approaches to the work. The fellows in this project are invited as multipliers to look beyond their national discourse and to develop new ways of thinking about their own work.
